Frequently asked questions

HOW MUCH SOD DO I NEED?
A roll of sod covers 9 square feet (16" x 81") Measure the area (in feet) then multiply length times width and divide by nine. That will give you the number of rolls required.

HOW MUCH CAN I CARRY IN MY TRUCK?
A compact pick-up can carry 30 or 40 rolls of sod. A 1/2 ton can carry 60-75 rolls. IT IS THE CUSTOMERS RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THE LOAD IS SECURE BEFORE LEAVING THE YARD.

HOW MUCH DOES IT WEIGH?
A roll of sod weighs between 45 and 55 lbs depending on the water content.

HOW DO I PREPARE THE AREA?
Remove any debris such as rocks, twigs or weeds. Grade and level the area. Make sure you have adequate topsoil to support new sod (8-10 cm is recommended). Rake to fine grade and loosen top layer of soil, then lay sod.

HOW DO I LAY SOD?
Start with a straight edge in the middle of the area. Lay sod in a staggered fashion (like bricks) making sure each roll is "tight" to the previous roll with no overlap. Sod can be cut with a knife for non-uniform areas. Sod may need to be staked if laying on a steep slope.

HOW MUCH WATER IS REQUIRED?
Be sure not to lay more than you can adequately keep watered. New sod should be saturated as soon as it is laid, approximately 1 inch of water within the first hour and then every day (or two) after that until it is well rooted, which could be up to two weeks. The amount of watering will depend on the temperature, sun and wind during this period. Make sure you are covering all areas with water, especially the edges which tend to dry out the quickest. It is best to water in early morning but be careful, you can apply too much water and your sod can actually drown.
